9/11 - Tsunami
Quote in upper right: "The Tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11." Although it's not right to compare terrorism to natural disasters, perspective is always interesting (via):

i saw this ad earlier this week & although it definitely lends some much needed perspective to the lack of awareness for the true human destruction caused by the tsunami....i'm fearful that it's already in the process of fueling the fire of the right-wing alarmists in questioning the 'patriotism' of the left..
ReplyDeletein some ways i agree that it's insensitive. for instance, if you replace the images of 9/11 with images of the holocaust... it does start to feel like a well meaning point, misplaced
But the Holocaust was worse, much worse, than the Tsunami--six million killed, not to mention those imprisoned and tortured.
ReplyDeleteThis comparison would never have been made.
In fact, I think it's wrong and misplaced to compare 9-11 to the Holocaust. 3,000 dead compared to 6,000,000 dead and more tortured.
Why not compare 9-11 to other Al-Quaeda attacks internationally, like the Madrid bombing, rather than the Holocaust?
I think Matt was just offering the Holocaust as an extreme example. I think we can all agree that the Holocaust tips the scales far in the other direction when you compare it with either of those events.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is there is major loss of human life in all cases no matter how you cut it, but it's probably best that social and historical significance be dealt with event by event, because there is no way to compare it.
exactly. holocaust being the extreme example. by no means do i think it's an apt comparison. the broader point being that this may help fuel for the fire of right-wingers like beck/limbaugh/o'reilly...and i'm sure the last thing they intend or want to do is help validate those guys.
